The flag of the state of South Dakota sits on a field of sky blue. The state seal in dark blue is centered on the flag within a white circle outlined in dark blue. Encircling the seal are the words "South Dakota" on top with the state nickname "The Mount Rushmore State" on the bottom.

The South Dakota State seal was originally designed before statehood, while it was still a territory; however slight alterations have been made since becoming a state. The outer ring contains the words "State of South Dakota" on the top with "Great Seal" on the bottom along with the year 1889, which is the year of statehood.
