The Kansas state flag features a sunflower (the states flower) above the Kansas state seal sitting on a field of navy blue. The seal has the words "Ad Astra per Aspera" which translates to "To the Stars Through Difficulties" and 34 white stars underneath it, representing all the states in the union and Kansas being the 34th state.

The seal features a farmer plowing his field near his home with a sunrise in the background behind the mountains. There is a steamboat sailing the Kansas River, a wagon-train heading west, and Indians hunting bison. Under the seal features the word "Kansas" in yellow, which was added in 1961.
