Flag wrapping is one of the most frustrating things about owning a flagpole. You put the flag up looking great, and an hour later it's twisted around the pole like a candy cane. Here's what causes it and how to fix it for good.
Why Flags Wrap Around Poles
Flag wrapping almost always comes down to one of three causes:
- Fixed snaps with no swivel — If your flag is attached with snaps that don't rotate, the flag has nowhere to go in shifting wind except around the pole
- Wrong flag size for the pole height — An oversized flag catches more wind and has more momentum when wind direction changes
- Wind turbulence near structures — Poles placed close to a house, fence, or large trees experience swirling wind rather than consistent directional wind
Fix #1: Replace Your Snaps with Swivel Snaps
This is the single most effective fix. Standard brass snap hooks hold the flag to the halyard rope but don't allow the flag's grommets to rotate. When wind shifts, the flag wraps. Swivel snaps have a rotating barrel between the hook and the attachment ring — so when wind changes direction, the flag can rotate with it instead of winding around the pole.
The Brass Double Swivel Snap ($5.00) and Brass Rubber Coated Swivel Snap ($8.00) are the easiest upgrades you can make — install them in under a minute, no tools needed.
Fix #2: Use the Freedom Ring 360° Swivel System
For telescoping flagpoles, the Freedom Ring 360° Swivel Replacement Kit ($69.95) takes it further — both the top and bottom attachment rings rotate independently and continuously, so the flag effectively never has an opportunity to build up enough rotational momentum to wrap.
Fix #3: Check Your Flag Size
As a rule, your flag's fly (longest dimension) should be no more than one-quarter of the pole height:
- 15 ft pole → 3x5 flag maximum
- 20 ft pole → 4x6 flag maximum
- 25 ft pole → 5x8 flag maximum
Going oversized means the flag generates more torque in wind shifts — swivel snaps help, but proper sizing matters too.
Fix #4: Reposition the Pole
If your pole is within 10 feet of a wall, fence, or large tree, turbulent airflow is likely part of the problem. Moving the pole even 5 feet farther from the obstruction can dramatically reduce wrapping.
The Anti-Theft Bonus
While you're checking your hardware, the Securi-Shur™ Securi-Shur™ Theft-Deterrent Security Locking Device ($33.33) locks the pole sections in place so the pole can't be collapsed and carried off. Worth adding if you're already working on the flagpole.
Summary
The fastest fix is swivel snaps — under $10 and five minutes of your time. For persistent wrappers, the Freedom Ring 360° system combined with correct flag sizing solves it in virtually every case.
