The current state flag of WV was adopted March 7th, 1962 by the state legislature. A blue stripe bored on all 4 sides a field of pure white with the states coats of arms in the center of the flag. The West Virginia state seal is wreathed by 2 swags of Rhododendron maximum with a red ribbon above the seal reading "State of West Virginia". The white field is to symbolize purity while the blue represents the bond of the Union. 2 other red ribbons appear on the flag, one tied and one reading "Montani Semper Liberi" which translates to "Mountaineers are always free." The state's coat of arms features two men; a farmer and a miner, to represent agriculture and industry in the state. The farmer holds an ax and a plow in front of a corn stalk while the miner holds a pickax with a sledgehammer and anvil behind him. The men stand on either side on a boulder which is inscribed with the date "June 20 1863", which is the date West Virginia joined the Union. In front of the boulder laying on the ground are two crossed rifles and a Phrygian cap, also called the cap of Liberty. This anchor represents hope and is surrounded by 13 stars of gold, which represent not only the original 13 colonies but also representing Rhode Island as the 13th state to ratify the constitution. Under the anchor, a blue ribbon reads "Hope." The anchor and the word hope are said to be inspired by the bible verse in Hebrews 6:18-19 which has the phrase "hope we have as an anchor of the soul." The flag is meant to resemble the Great Seal of the United States. Interestingly the flags official proportions are 33:26 (shorter than most state flags) however; in practice, they are sold as 5:3 ratios.The flag features a bald eagle holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons, set on a field of dark blue. The flag was officially designated the state flag in 1963, which makes Nebraska one of the last states to adopt an official state flag. The Nebraska state seal features a steamboat in the Missouri river, a blacksmith, and his anvil, a cabin with harvested wheat, as well as a train heading to the Rocky Mountains. The images represent the importance of settlers and agriculture. A banner above the image reads "Equality before the law." Around the outer ring of the state seal, it reads "Great Seal of the State of Nebraska, March 1st, 1867," which is the date the state joined the union.  The Nebraska flag was originally requested in 1925 by a bill that called for the state seal in gold and silver on a field of national blue," this was after a 1921 bill had called for a change of the original state seal. The architect of the Nebraska State Capitol, Bertram Goodhue, designed a new state seal (shown below) that was more symbolic in nature. However, it failed to pass the legislature.
