The Maryland state flag contains the heraldic banner of George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore. The black and gold designs are the coat of arms of the Calvert line while the red and white designs are the Crossland lines coat of arms. The Crosslands were Lord Balitmores maternal family line. As Calvert's mother was an heiress he was entitled to incorporate both coats of arms in his banner.
The Maryland state flag is the only US State flag directly based on English heraldry and is one of 4 state flags who doesn't use the color blue.
